Not all used motorcycles will be in good condition. Some have hidden issues that will result in expensive (and unexpected) repairs down the road. Inspecting used motorcycles helps you uncover those problems before you buy, which can save you a fortune in repair bills!

Supplies To Bring

Gather up the items that will make the inspection easier.

  • A flashlight. The extra light will help you examine the used motorcycle more thoroughly.
  • A notebook and writing utensil. It's easy to forget a key detail uncovered during an inspection, especially if you inspect more than one used motorcycle. Bring some method of taking notes, whether it's a physical pad of paper or a digital note in your phone.
  • A screwdriver. This will help you test the spokes.
  • This inspection checklist. Either print it out or have it loaded up on your phone.
  • Payment. If the used motorcycle passes inspection, you will want to have the payment ready to go. Find out whether you will need a deposit or to pay in full.

The Used Motorcycle's Body

The first step is to inspect the body. Remember that aesthetic issues such as dents can indicate past collisions, which mean issues could be lurking inside. 

Make sure the motorcycle's body is in good condition, which means:

  • The fuel tank should have a paint coat free of flakes
  • The fenders and side covers should be free of dents
  • The seat should be free of tears or collapsed foam
  • The chrome should be rust-free

If the model has an added windshield, check that it's installed correctly and is also in good condition.

The Engine

A sneaky seller may start up the engine before you arrive, which allows the engine to run through its issues and appear fine when you turn it on. That's why it's important to tell the seller you will inspect the motorcycle cold. This gives you the most accurate insight into the engine health.

Make sure that:

  • The engine smoke is not heavy or odd colored (such as deep blue or black)
  • The engine sound is normal and free of rattles
  • The exhaust is free of damage or leaks
  • The transmission does not jump out of gear during the test drive
  • The clutch does not drag or slip during the test drive

Electronics

Broken electrical systems can lead to costly repairs.

Make sure that:

  • All the lights work, including the signal lights, brake lights, high beams, and low beams
  • The horn is loud and functional
  • The battery starts without missing a beat

If there are any electrical accessories added to the motorcycle, check that they are properly installed.

Tires

You are almost done with the inspection! The last step is to look over the tires.

Make sure that:

  • The tires are free from damage and contain enough tread
  • The wheels are dent-free and do not wobble when you spin them
  • The spokes are tight (hit them with a screwdriver handle and you should hear a "ping" sound)
  • The chain is adjusted correctly
  • The belt is free of issues, such as any cuts

If the used motorcycle passes inspection, then you are ready to ride!
